Year 2 spelling guide
Year 2 Spelling Words for Australian Students
By Year 2, many children are ready to compare different ways of spelling the same sound, work with longer words and notice how endings affect a base word.
This is often the point where spelling becomes less predictable. Words such as bread, great and field cannot be solved by applying one simple rule, so children need repeated opportunities to compare patterns and notice meaningful word parts.
What spelling knowledge develops in Year 2?
Year 2 practice may include alternative vowel spellings, r-controlled vowels, diphthongs, silent letters and two-syllable words. Children also learn spelling conventions for plurals and past-tense endings, such as changing baby to babies or doubling the final consonant in stopped.
Suffixes begin to show how spelling and meaning work together. Words such as helpful, careless and kindness are easier to understand when a child can identify the base word and the added meaning.
Examples of Year 2 spelling areas
- Alternative vowel spellings - for example, bread
- R-controlled vowels - for example, storm
- Two-syllable words - for example, picnic
- Silent letters - for example, knife
- Plural spelling changes - for example, babies
- Past-tense endings - for example, stopped
Help your child look inside the word
Instead of asking your child to copy a word five times, ask what they notice. Which part can be sounded out? Is there a base word? What changed when the ending was added? Which part will need to be remembered?
For a word such as cried, compare cry and cried. For stopped, identify stop before discussing why the final consonant is doubled. This makes the practice about transferable knowledge rather than one isolated answer.
Use sentences to check real spelling
A child may spell a word correctly on a list but not use it correctly in writing. Give a short spoken sentence and ask your child to write the target word in context. This also helps with pairs such as there and their, where meaning determines the spelling.
