Year 1 spelling guide
Year 1 Spelling Words for Australian Students
In Year 1, children build on simple words and learn that the same sound can appear in larger patterns. They may practise consonant blends, digraphs, common long-vowel spellings, plural endings and frequently used words.
The goal is not simply to remember a list for one test. It is to notice patterns that can be used again when reading and writing unfamiliar words.
What spelling knowledge develops in Year 1?
A child who can spell cat may next learn to keep both consonant sounds in crab or black. Digraphs introduce two letters that work together, as in shell and three. Long-vowel sounds can be written in several common ways, as shown in rain, game, seed, night and boat.
Year 1 students also begin to see how endings change words. Adding -s can show more than one, while -ing can show an action happening. Compound words such as raincoat help children see that two known words can join to create a new one.
Examples of Year 1 spelling areas
- Consonant blends - for example, black
- Digraphs - for example, shell
- Long-vowel patterns - for example, rain
- Plural endings - for example, boxes
- Adding -ing - for example, jumping
- High-frequency words - for example, have
A simple way to practise
Group words by pattern rather than mixing ten unrelated words. For example, compare rain, train and play and ask what letters are representing the long /a/ sound. Then ask your child to use one word in a spoken sentence before writing it.
After a word is spelt correctly, check it again two or three days later. This delayed review is more informative than asking for the same word repeatedly in one sitting.
When a child guesses from the first letter
Encourage your child to listen all the way through the word. Say it naturally, then slowly, and ask them to identify each sound or syllable. If a spelling contains a pattern they have not learned yet, explain it rather than expecting them to guess.
