Kindergarten spelling begins with hearing sounds in spoken words and connecting those sounds with letters. At this stage, the most useful words are not necessarily the most impressive ones. They are words that allow children to practise sound-letter relationships they have already been taught.

A short list can help families practise at home, but it should support phonics learning rather than become a weekly memory test.

What does Kindergarten spelling look like?

Children commonly begin with simple words in which the sounds are easy to hear, such as cat, sit and sun. As their phonics knowledge grows, they can work with beginning blends such as stop, common digraphs such as ship and familiar final patterns such as duck.

They also meet a small number of very common words, including the and was, that may contain a spelling they cannot yet fully decode. These words still need to be taught carefully, with attention drawn to the regular and unusual parts.

How to practise without overwhelming your child

Keep sessions brief and finish while your child is still successful. If they cannot hear or identify the sounds, spelling the word from memory is unlikely to build the knowledge they need.

What if the list is too easy or too hard?

The sequence used at your child's school matters more than the label Kindergarten. Stay with words that match the phonics patterns already introduced in class. For an easier challenge, use simple consonant-vowel-consonant words. For a harder challenge, ask your child to write a short sentence containing a familiar word.
