Year 4 Spelling Words for Australian Students

In Year 4, children increasingly meet words that cannot be spelt reliably by sound alone. They draw on spelling generalisations, morphology, word families and word origins to make sense of unfamiliar and multisyllabic words.

This is a useful year to shift the question from 'Can you remember the word?' to 'What do you know about how this word is built?'

What spelling knowledge develops in Year 4?

Year 4 practice can include double letters, complex letter strings such as ough, prefixes, suffixes, irregular plurals and homophones. Children also begin to recognise how related words preserve meaning even when their pronunciation changes.

Word origins can make unfamiliar spellings more memorable. For example, aqua relates to water, tele relates to distance and port relates to carrying. These are not rules that solve every word, but they give children useful clues.

Compare related words

Build a small word family around one base: magic, magician and magical; decide, decision and decisive; create, creative and creation. Ask what stays the same in spelling and meaning, and what changes.

This approach helps children see why a word is spelt as it is, rather than treating every difficult spelling as a separate fact to memorise.

Check the word in authentic writing

After practising a word, ask your child to use it in a sentence or short paragraph. This reveals whether they can retrieve the spelling while thinking about meaning, punctuation and the rest of the sentence.
